== BCI Shelter == Project Coordinators: Debbie Buelow, [[http://afhny.org/members/profile.php?id=50|Shelby Doyle]], [[http://afhny.org/members/profile.php?id=21|Pollyanna Rhee]] Started as a soup kitchen in 1981, [[http://www.broadwaycommunity.org/|Broadway Community Inc.]] currently provides services ranging from art therapy and catering and a women's shelter from its space in Morningside Heights. AFHny's project includes the design of an area to provide mental health and medical referrals to clients and additional storage for the women's shelter. ===== Design Concept - home_less ===== **home** - A dwelling-place, house, abode; the fixed residence of a family or household; the seat of domestic life and interests; one’s own house; the dwelling in which one habitually lives, or which one regards as one’s proper abode. Sometimes including the members of a family collectively; the home-circle or household. **less** - Of not so great size, extent, or degree (as something mentioned or implied); of inferior dimensions, bulk, duration, etc.; smaller. Of smaller quantity or amount; not so much. Opposed to more. ===== Phase 1 - Design/Build ===== Counseling unit partitions constructed by AFHny Design team to provide the Social Work team with privacy. Materials: reclaimed wood doors, clad in copper flashing, blackboard + magnetic paint, and cork. ===== Phase 2 - Medical Area Renovation ===== Care for the Homeless (CFH), a non-profit which provides medical services to at-risk populations, received a small federal grant to renovate a 500 square foot medical facility within the basement of the Broadway Presbyterian Church in Morningside Heights, Manhattan. The space is shared by multiple homeless outreach services which are provided by the church and operated by a non-profit called Broadway Community Incorporated (BCI). This renovation was made possible by the donation of time and material by countless people and organizations, including but not limited to: Hafele, 3-Form, Elkay, Forbo, Evans + Paul, AFM Safecoat, and Bettencourt Building Supply. Construction of this project is also the result of the extensive creative collaboration between AFHny and the crew of [[http://www.goconstruction.net|G.O. Construction Corporation]], an experienced New York City based contractor. ====Press Coverage==== [[http://www.greenbuildingsnyc.com/2008/04/10/sustainable-homeless-on-the-upper-west-side/|Green Buildings NYC]] Visit the [[http://www.flickr.com/photos/ny_sed/sets/72157594190300349//|BCI Flickr Page]]
